IMPROVE YOUR
ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS

 

Our LEARNING ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES (LEAP) program provides full-time intensive English instruction and offers non-native speakers the linguistic, academic, and social skills they need for success in an American university. LEAP is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), and many of our programs offer conditional admission for LEAP students.

The University Center for International Education also organizes the

weekly CONVERSATION CLUB, where you can practice your English

skills with native speakers.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS  

UNDERGRADUATE REQUIREMENTS

You must have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and a minimum score of English proficiency from one of these tests: 

•  TOEFL: 61
•  TOEFL home: 61
•  IELTS: 5.5 with no subscore lower than 5.0
•  IELTS indicator: 5.5 with no subscore lower than 5.0
•  Pearson PTE: 51
•  Cambridge test: Minimum scaled score of 162, with
    no subscore below 154, on the Cambridge English
    Qualifications.

GRADUATE REQUIREMENTS

You must have a cumulative 3.0 grade point average ,and some programs may require the GRE or GMAT.
If your native language is not English and you do not have a degree from a regionally accredited U.S.
college or university, you must have a minimum score on one of the following exams:

•  A score of 79/120 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (T.O.E.F.L.)
•  A band 6 or higher through the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
•  A score of 57 or higher on the Pearson PTE
•  Satisfactory completion of LEAP level 4 T.O.E.F.L. waiver track
•  If you have graduated from a school in a country where English is the official language for higher
     education
, you will not be required to demonstrate English proficiency.

Some colleges or programs require a higher English proficiency requirement.

COSTS AND 
SCHOLARSHIPS 

UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS

University Center for International Education (UCIE) Undergraduate Merit Scholarship is available for first-
year or transfer students of any nationality and is valued at $2,000 to $6,000 per year, based on your GPA. You
must meet undergraduate language proficiency requirements for consideration. Scholarships are awarded upon
admission to the university and are limited to funds available. The deadline to apply is May 15. 

#YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship recognizes first-year international students who demonstrate a vision
for enhancing intercultural understanding, with a renewable scholarship of $10,000 per year for four years of
undergraduate education. To qualify, you must have attended or graduated from a secondary school outside of
the U.S. and have demonstrated interest and personal initiative in activities involving intercultural learning and
exchange. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is May 1.  

GRADUATE MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS
 

International graduate students are eligible for the non-resident Graduate Merit Scholarship. This does not apply to
Boonshoft School of Medicine or School of Professional Psychology students. The maximum award is $10,000,
divided between four semesters.  

Graduate assistantships are available. Please contact your academic department to find out what assistantships are available.
